Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) for Automotive Paint

Jan 05, 2026
Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB) is widely used as a binder in protective and decorative coatings for metals, wood, textiles, fabrics, paper, plastics, and leather. Our CAB series, including models such as CAB-381-0.1, CAB-381-0.5, CAB-381-2, CAB-381-20, CAB-551-0.2, and CAB-551-0.01, serves as a highly effective additive in the paint and coating industry.

CAB is soluble not only in highly polar solvents but also in alcohol-based systems. It is compatible with a variety of synthetic resins and high-boiling-point plasticizers, and exhibits excellent properties including non-yellowing, flexibility, cold resistance, good color retention, outstanding flow characteristics, hydrolysis resistance, and high transparency.

In coating formulations, CAB significantly improves flow and leveling, eliminates film shrinkage, enhances solvent release, promotes pigment dispersion, improves adhesion, and increases coating hardness. As a key additive, it is extensively used in automotive touch-up paints, motorcycle coatings, metallic finishes, plastic coatings, wood finishes, paper varnishes, fabric coatings, and printing inks.

Key Performance Benefits of CAB in Automotive Paint Applications:
Accelerates paint film drying
Enhances UV resistance, sunlight resistance, and improves gloss and color retention
Orients metallic flakes to improve brightness and metallic effect
Improves application properties and ensures uniform film thickness
Increases solvent resistance of automotive coatings
Reduces sagging and inhibits shrinkage or cratering
Exhibits excellent pigment wettability, shortening color paste grinding time
Water-white color with high clarity and transparency

Resistant to plasticizer migration and easy to polish
